The administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has clarified that the fund does not provide financial assistance for patients seeking medical treatment abroad.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, she noted that the fund has recently faced growing pressure, with individuals tagging the organisation in social media posts requesting support for treatment overseas.
“The legislation establishing the fund limits its mandate to offering free treatment for non-communicable diseases within Ghana. Many people keep requesting funding to go abroad. Let me make it clear: we do not provide support for treatment outside the country. The money spent on one patient going to India could instead help about 20 patients here. Anything beyond the borders, as stated in the Act, is beyond our mandate,” she said.
