The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has emphasized the urgent need to restore Ghana’s reading culture through a focused national effort to invest in libraries at all educational levels.
Addressing the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Monday, November 3, 2025, Mr Iddrisu noted that the country’s declining reading habits are negatively impacting both learning outcomes and civic consciousness.
“The reading culture in Ghana must be improved,” he stated. “When you travel abroad, especially in the mornings, you often see people reading newspapers and staying informed about current events. We need to reflect on Ghana’s reading habits as a nation.”
The Minister further disclosed that during his regional tours, concerns about inadequate library facilities have been repeatedly raised.
“During my visit to Bono Ahafo, the Omanhene expressed worries about the state of the Sunyani Regional Library. Similar issues came up in Koforidua. In many schools, library resources and support remain insufficient,” he added.
