Chief Executive Officer of Lynx Group Limited, Richie Mensah, revealed that some people verbally attacked his mother for supporting his decision to pursue music instead of medicine.
In an interview, Richie explained that many people expected him to study medicine after senior high school. However, he chose music, and his mother fully supported his decision.
“When I started my journey at 17, many people said I was too young. After completing senior high, I spoke with my mum and told her I wanted to do music. The news shocked everyone because they expected me to go to medical school, Many people insulted my mother and accused her of letting me waste my intelligence and future. They questioned why I would pursue music instead of medicine,” Richie recounted.
Further, Richie also shared that the early criticism inspired his hit song ‘Yaro’, which reflects the doubt and backlash he faced at the start of his career.
“When I dropped my first song, many people didn’t believe I would make it—but I did. ‘Yaro’ means ‘small boy’ in Hausa. I was saying, ‘They say I am Yaro, but they can’t contest the Yaro.’ I wanted the song to inspire young people not to let others limit their potential because of their age or unconventional choices,” he said.
