The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has urged Ghanaian nationals to remain indoors and refrain from opening their businesses as it prepares to conduct another evacuation exercise next week amid escalating anti-immigrant tensions in the country.
In a public advisory video, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, advised Ghanaians to remain at the accommodations arranged by the High Commission and avoid unnecessary movement while authorities continue to monitor the security situation ahead of the unofficial June 30 deadline for foreigners to leave the country.
“”We will undertake another repatriation exercise next week, and we will communicate details of the evacuation in due course. We have also engaged the South African Police to provide security for Ghanaians staying at the designated shelters.”30th June is the day of the said demonstration. Don’t open your shops and businesses. Those we have secured accommodations at churches and hotels for, kindly stay there and don’t come out. The police will be there to protect you,” he said.
The High Commission issued the advisory as anti-immigrant groups in South Africa intensified calls for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country, with June 30 serving as an unofficial deadline for their departure.
The renewed tensions have heightened fears among migrant communities, forcing thousands of foreign nationals to relocate to safer areas or return to their home countries in recent weeks over concerns about possible violence.
