EC Disqualifies GFP Flagbearer Over Nomination Errors

Written by Sarah Boye

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) replacement flagbearer, over errors and illegalities in his nomination form.

EC Chair Jean Mensa announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12, explaining that despite giving the GFP a chance to address the discrepancies, certain irregularities persisted and violated electoral laws.

“The party solve some issues, but Mensa stated that the EC rejected other elements as illegitimate, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the integrity of the electoral process.”

The GFP faced a major hurdle after its founder and initial flagbearer, Akua Donkor, passed away unexpectedly on October 15. Her death forced the party to quickly find a replacement for the December 2024 presidential election.

The EC provided a 10-day extension for the GFP to submit a new nominee, leading to Kubi’s appointment.
