President John Mahama has approved a Cabinet-backed decision to exempt electricity bills for selected strategic institutions, aiming to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential public services.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, announced the measure and explained that the initiative supports key sectors such as security, health, and education, while also promoting accountability in energy use and strengthening the operational capacity of critical government institutions.
“The exemption applies to core operational units within the Office of the President and the Ministries of Defence, Interior, Health, and Education. In education, the relief covers facilities such as classrooms, lecture halls, research centres, and laboratories—excluding dormitories and dining halls.
In the health sector, hospitals, theatres, wards, and medical labs are involve, while staff housing and recreational areas are not. For the defence and interior ministries, only critical installations like intelligence units, emergency systems, and police response centres are eligible.”
The Ministry of Finance will cover the cost of electricity for these institutions through their existing budget allocations.
