The Ministry of Energy has announced that authorities have completely shut down the Akosombo Dam following a devastating fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation at Akosombo.
Speaking in an interview cited by YADTV on Monday, April 27, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, detailed the extent of the destruction and its impact on the country’s power generation system.
“The fire completely destroyed the switch yard at the Akosombo Substation, leaving it beyond salvage. It also completely destroyed the primary control room for the switch yard. We had to shut the Akosombo Dam completely, because Akosombo is a major component when it comes to our power generation.”
Further, he added that engineers have already begun efforts to bypass the damaged system in order to stabilise electricity supply as quickly as possible.
The fire reportedly broke out at about 2:01 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, when flames engulfed the substation, one of the most critical installations in Ghana’s electricity transmission network.
