“Outdated Meters And Settings Causing Discrepancies” -ECG

Written by Yad Media

Acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Engineer Julius Kpekpena, has attributed recent billing discrepancies to outdated metering systems and incorrect tariff settings.

Addressing a press briefing in Accra on Monday, April 20, 2026, Acting Managing Director of ECG, Engineer Julius Kpekpena, rejected claims that ECG is overbilling consumers, following widespread concerns over the rapid depletion of prepaid electricity credits in recent months.

“When we investigated, we realised that some of our old meters, obsolete meters that we are replacing, are on a 2021 tariff. There are several that I have seen that were on the 2021 tariff.”

Mr. Kpekpena further disclosed that once teams update these meters to reflect current tariffs, customers may notice that their prepaid credit depletes more quickly.

“When the team updates the tariff, the customer will immediately see the credit being use at six times the previous rate. They think it’s the ECG that is cheating them because the rate has gone up, or we have overcharged them. The truth is that they have underpaid for a long time,”

In February, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition directed ECG to investigate growing complaints from customers who said their prepaid balances were running out unusually fast, raising suspicions of billing errors or overcharging.
