“Grant Self-Recognisance Bail To Wontumi”-Minority Leader

Written by Yad Media

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to grant self-recognisance bail to the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.

Speaking after leading a delegation of minority MPs to EOCO on Thursday to show solidarity with Wontumi, Afenyo-Markin criticised both the nature of the arrest and the bail conditions imposed.

“Wontumi is not a flight risk. He will cooperate with investigations. The GHS50 million bail is excessive and unjustifiable,” he said.

He further condemned the arrest as unnecessarily forceful, described it as a “Rambo-style” operation, and insisted that the authorities had not formally invited Wontumi before detaining him.

Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 27, following his arrest over alleged financial improprieties involving EXIMBANK. The bail conditions, which include two sureties and a GHS50 million bond, have sparked backlash from his political allies and supporters.
