The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has defended the inclusion of general items in road contracts, describing them as essential for supporting agencies under the ministry and improving service delivery.
During an inspection of the Ghana Highways Authority North East Regional Office on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Mr. Agbodza revealed that resources from general items in contracts funded the construction of the office facility.
“I work with people, and I am sure that between 2022 and 2024 could account for one of the worst economic periods in our country’s history, yet it was within that same period that we built this office, the government still delivered critical infrastructure projects and office facilities during the period.”
Further, Mr. Agbodza stressed that staff of the Ghana Highways Authority and other agencies under the ministry deserve decent working conditions similar to employees of other public institutions.
“The staff of Highways deserve better. Engineers at the agency do critical work just like doctors, nurses, the police, and Bank of Ghana staff. There is nothing wrong with providing decent office accommodation and logistics for them to work.”
