Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government will construct 50,000 housing units for teachers nationwide to improve accommodation, boost teacher welfare, and encourage retention in rural communities.
Speaking at the Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, Mr Iddrisu said the government would implement the project through a decentralised approach, with the District Assemblies Common Fund overseeing construction at the regional and district levels.
“We intend to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers all across the country. It is led by the District Assemblies Common Fund in order that we may decentralise it at the regional and district level. The Teacher Dabre Initiative is a government programme to provide decent housing facilities for teachers and address challenges with inadequate accommodation in some parts of the country,”
Mr Iddrisu added that the Ministry of Education would support the project by leveraging resources from the Ghana Secondary School Pension (GSOP) as collateral to help finance the initiative.
“Apart from the 20% allowance for persons who are self-posting into rural areas, we are almost through,”.
This housing initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve teachers’ welfare, address accommodation challenges and make postings to rural communities more attractive.
