President John Dramani Mahama has urged African leaders to focus on achieving economic self-reliance and shared prosperity, stressing the importance of value addition, transparent governance, and stronger regional trade.
Addressing Kenya’s Jamhuri Day celebrations on Friday, December 12, 2025, he remarked that while earlier generations secured political independence, it is now the duty of today’s African leaders to secure economic freedom and improved livelihoods for their citizens.
“The global economic system often positions Africa as mainly a source of raw materials and a consumer of imported finished products.
Africa must now prioritize adding value to its exports, securing a more equitable return from its natural resources, and ensuring accountable leadership.”
Further, President Mahama also called on African nations to tap into the innovation and vitality of their youth and to boost trade within the continent.
