“Proper Sports Financing Can Boost Ghana’s GDP”– Kofi Adams

Written by Yad Media

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says a well-structured financing framework can significantly increase sports’ contribution to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, February 19, he stressed that sustainable funding is essential as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“The success of the Black Stars on the global stage will depend heavily on adequate financial backing. Ghana has qualified for the World Cup; funding will be a key component for our participation, and it is in that spirit, Speaker, that I make this statement,” he said.

Mr. Adams further noted that passing laws alone will not transform the sports sector without real commitment and investment.

“Legislation alone does not finance sports; commitment does. Globally, the sports industry exceeds USD 500 billion in value, yet on our continent, sports contribute less than 0.5% to GDP in most countries, not because we lack talent, not because we lack passion, but because we have not yet built a financing system that matches our ambition.”
