Written by MsBoye

Optometrist Dr James Freeman Duah-Bisiw has warned that prolonged screen exposure can cause dry eyes and other symptoms associated with digital eye strain.

In an interview cited by YADTV, he explained that people blink less when concentrating on screens, disrupting the tear film that lubricates the eyes and helps maintain clear vision.

“When you are focus on the screen, your blink rate reduces. The effects may show up as a gritty sensation, redness, intermittent blurred vision, or even excessive tearing.”

Dr Duah-Bisiw further explained that watery eyes can sometimes indicate dryness, as the eyes produce extra tears to restore moisture and relieve discomfort.

“Although prolonged screen use does not necessarily cause permanent eye damage, it can contribute to visual discomfort and impairment. On the other hand, children who spend  periods on tablets and other screens also affected”

In addition, he advised screen users to take regular breaks and pay attention to recurring eye discomfort to help reduce the effects of digital eye strain.
