President John Mahama on May Day 2025 assured Ghanaians that his administration will not privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), pledging instead to strengthen the public sector.
Speaking to workers at the Black Star Square in Accra, he outlined plans to improve power distribution through public-private partnerships, not full privatisation.
Mahama dismissed growing fears about privatising ECG, insisting,
“It is not my intention to privatise ECG as an institution. Our focus is on public-private collaboration to inject efficiency into our downstream electricity distribution system.”
Further, he blamed poor governance over the past eight years for plunging ECG into a debt of GH¢68 billion, warning that the national power system risks collapse without urgent intervention.
“We can only bring down tariffs if we improve the efficiency of power distribution,” he stressed.
His comments responded directly to public concerns over ECG’s financial woes and the threat of mismanagement.
