President John Mahama has announced that the government has disbursed GHC 1 million in financial support to all 18 Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs ahead of the new season.
Announcing on Saturday, September 21, at the presidency Mahama stated that the initiative demonstrates the government’s renewed commitment to sustainable sports financing.
“We’ve managed to give every club something at the start of the Premier League. It’s a start, and I’m sure the fund will grow,” he said.
He further highlighted football’s power to unite Ghanaians and added that prudent fiscal management and efforts to reduce wasteful expenditure made the intervention possible.
“Football unites us. Supporters of Kotoko include Dagatis, Dagombes, Ashantis, and Fantis; it’s the sport that brings us all together. So when we invest in football, we invest in national unity,” he said.
