Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced that the government is developing a plan to upgrade selected Category B senior high schools to Category A status to address the country’s school placement challenges.
Speaking at the launch of the ADEA Triennale on Education Conference, Mr Iddrisu said the Ministry of Education needs sufficient budgetary support to provide the necessary infrastructure for the selected schools.
“The current placement system poses major difficulties, with 393,000 qualified applicants competing for only 76,000 available spaces.”
Further, Mr Iddrisu revealed that he has already begun discussions with the President to implement the plan in 2026.
“Under the proposal, the government will convert at least 10 Category C schools to Category B and another 10 Category B schools to Category A. The upgrade will include new classroom blocks, dormitories, and improved teaching and learning materials to enhance education quality.”
In addition, he emphasised that the initiative seeks to promote fairness and expand access for students who struggle to secure admission into top-tier Category A schools but stressed that the project depends on adequate budgetary allocation.
