The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Ghanaians to exercise extreme caution when travelling to or living in Mexico, due to escalating security tensions in parts of the country.
In a press statement, the ministry advised Ghanaian nationals in affected areas to limit their movements, remain vigilant, and avoid non-essential travel until the situation stabilizes.
“Citizens are to seek assistance from the mission if necessary, particularly in cases involving travel difficulties, security concerns, or emergency evacuation needs,” the statement said. It noted that the unrest has involved armed clashes, road blockades, and the burning of vehicles, resulting in casualties and widespread disruption to daily life.
The advisory follows a major security operation by Mexican forces on February 22, 2026, which reportedly led to the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, popularly known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
