The Ministry of Education has directed a nationwide review of school security arrangements after a series of violent incidents claimed students’ lives and unsettled communities.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu described the surge in school violence as deeply troubling and unacceptable.
“The use of untrained personnel as school security staff, often called “watchmen”, raises questions about the practice of appointing individuals without policing or basic security training. There is the need to review recruitment and training processes to create a safer environment for both students and teachers.”
Further, he announced plans to work closely with security agencies and law enforcement to ensure schools remain safe spaces for learning, emphasising the urgency of coordinated action to curb the trend.
