Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced the formation of an 11-member committee to oversee the transition from the double-track to the single-track system in Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs).
Speaking at a media briefing, Mr. Iddrisu said the double-track system, introduced to reduce congestion, has negatively affected learning outcomes by cutting down contact hours and study time. Stressing that government is investing in infrastructure, expanding digital learning support, and involving private schools under the Free SHS policy to phase out the system.
“The double-track system has impacted negatively on the quality of education. Students have fewer contact hours and less study time, which affects their performance. Government can end the system by expanding infrastructure, strengthening digital resources, and allowing private SHSs to absorb qualified students.”
Prof. Peter Grant of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) chairs the committee, which will review the 2024/2025 academic calendar and propose a roadmap for the phase-out.
