Sports Minister Kofi Adams revealed that the government could have used the scrapped betting tax as a major source of funding for Ghana’s sports development if officials had managed it properly.
In an interview, he explained that although the tax was a good idea, poor implementation prevented it from benefiting the sports sector.
“If the government had used the revenue for sports instead of diverting it to unnecessary areas, we would not have faced the problems we did,” he said.
Further, Mr Adams also stated that a good policy loses public support when implemented without a clear goal.
“The government is now creating a more structured and transparent alternative, the National Sports Fund, to provide consistent support for Ghana’s sports industry. It will offer well-organised financing for sports and will rely on levies from existing revenue sources rather than new taxes.”
