Bank Of Ghana Slashes Policy Rate By 350 Basis Points To 21.5%

Written by Yad Media

The governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has announced that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has cut the central bank’s benchmark policy rate by 350 basis points, bringing it down to 21.5%.

Speaking at a press briefing after the 126th MPC meeting on September 17, 2025, Dr Asiama explained that the rate cut was determine by expectations of strong monetary policy reforms and continued fiscal discipline, despite existing economic risks.

“The Committee anticipates further easing of inflation in the short term. Based on this outlook, the majority of members voted to lower the policy rate to 21.5%,” he said.

Dr Asiama further noted that this marks the second significant rate cut in 2025, as the Bank of Ghana moves to encourage lending and support economic recovery, despite concerns over currency stability and the potential impact of planned utility tariff increases.

“Earlier in July 2025, the MPC had reduced the rate by 300 basis points from 28% to 25%, following a slight increase from 27% to 28% in March.”
