“African Leaders Must End Donor Dependence”-Haruna Iddrisu

Written by Yad Media

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has called on African governments to boost domestic investment in education and reduce their dependence on donor funding.

Addressing participants at the AdEA Triennale 2025 in Accra on Wednesday, October 29, he challenged the continent’s readiness for the future, citing ongoing issues such as overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and inadequate infrastructure for digital, inclusive, and equitable education.

“Africa must ask itself if it is truly ready for the future,”We still face congested classrooms, limited teachers, and poor infrastructure. But with your presence here, I believe we can find solutions to these challenges.”Mr Iddrisu said.

Further, he also raised alarm over the growing number of out-of-school children in Africa, contrasting it with other regions where such numbers are declining.

“It’s only in Africa that the number of out-of-school children keeps increasing, while other continents record a steady decline. African leaders must demonstrate stronger commitment by mobilising local resources for education.”
