“AFCON To Expand From 24 To 28 Teams”- CAF

Written by Yad Media

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled ambitious plans to transform African football, proposing to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from 24 to 28 teams.

Under this proposal, more nations will compete on Africa’s biggest football stage, a move widely seen as promoting inclusivity and driving development across the continent. The current 24-team format, introduced in 2019, already broadened participation, but CAF believes that adding four more teams will further strengthen competition and give emerging football nations a viable path to elite tournaments.

CAF also plans to overhaul the AFCON calendar. After the 2028 edition, the tournament will move from a biennial schedule to a quadrennial cycle. This shift aims to align African football with global competitions while giving nations extra time to prepare, develop talent, and upgrade infrastructure.

CAF’s strategy extends beyond AFCON. The organisation will launch an African Nations League in 2029, providing regular, high-quality matches between African nations. This league will help teams stay competitive between AFCON tournaments, generate additional commercial opportunities, and raise the global profile of African football.

Although CAF has confirmed the expansion to 28 teams as part of its roadmap, the governing body has not yet announced which edition will implement the new format. Officials continue to refine regulations and plan structures to ensure a smooth transition.

These reforms demonstrate CAF’s commitment to modernising African football, boosting competitiveness, and creating more opportunities for players and nations. If implemented successfully, they could usher in a new era for the African game, one defined by growth, inclusivity, and global prominence.

The decision marks a major milestone in CAF’s vision to elevate the continent’s premier football competition, both on and off the field.
